Neuropsychiatry

What is Neuropsychiatry?

Neuropsychiatry is a medical specialty at the intersection of neurology and psychiatry, focusing on the complex relationship between the brain and behaviour. It deals with the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders that arise from neurological conditions, brain injuries, or structural or functional abnormalities in the brain.

While psychiatry and neurology were once seen as separate disciplines, neuropsychiatry bridges the gap—recognising that many mental health symptoms may have a biological or neurological cause.

How is Neuropsychiatry Different?

Unlike general psychiatry, which often focuses on mood, thought, and behavioural disorders from a psychological perspective, neuropsychiatry incorporates both medical and neurological knowledge to assess how the brain’s structure and function contribute to a patient’s condition.

Neuropsychiatrists have specialist training that allows them to evaluate both the mental health and the neurological integrity of the individual—often using a combination of neuroimaging, neuropsychological testing, and comprehensive clinical evaluation.

The Goal of Neuropsychiatry

Neuropsychiatry aims to provide a deeper understanding of the biological factors behind psychiatric symptoms and deliver holistic, evidence-based care. By viewing mental health through both a neurological and psychological lens, patients can receive more accurate diagnoses and targeted treatments, improving overall quality of life.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

Your first appointment usually takes around 60 minutes. Dr Gill will conduct a complete medical assessment including a discussion of your symptoms, medical history, medications, mood, memory and thinking. Any previous neuroimaging studies or laboratory results will be reviewed if available. You are welcome to bring a support person with you to this appointment. Depending on your needs, further tests such as brain imaging and cognitive assessments may be recommended. You may choose to have a one-off assessment with a detailed management plan prepared for your GP or continue with ongoing care and follow-up appointments with Dr Gill.

How do follow up appointments work?

Follow-up appointments are typically shorter than the initial consultation and focus on reviewing your progress, adjusting treatment plans, and addressing any new or ongoing concerns. These appointments provide an opportunity to discuss how you’re responding to any recommended strategies or medications, review results from any tests, and coordinate care with your GP or other specialists if needed. The frequency of follow-up appointments will depend on your individual needs and can be discussed with Dr Gill at your initial appointment.

How do I make an appointment?

A referral from your GP or medical specialist is needed before we can book your appointment. Once we receive your referral, our intake officer will reach out to organise your first appointment.
